| Directed by Leon Gast (of Muhamad Ali's "When We Were Kings") this is more than a music DVD. It's about the urban Hispanic experience –NYC style. A musical documentary filmed in part at the Cheetah club in New York, as well as around El Barrio (Spanish Harlem). Leon Gast captured the warm, infectious, atmosphere of a Fania All-Stars unforgettable show at the Cheetah (1971), focusing as much on the audience and dancers as the musicians (Ray Barretto, Willie Colon, Larry Harlow, Johnny Pacheco, etc., etc., etc.). Then, Gast went deep into the Hispanic barrios of Spanish Harlem and the Lower East Side, where he filmed illegal cockfights, Santeria rituals and the everyday vibe of El Barrio, creating the sense of a struggling, but defiant, united community –their music gluing it together. An amazing documentary. |
